Arugam Bay
Eastern Province
A surf town on the south-east corner, and the gateway to Kumana and the lagoons behind the dunes.
- How long
- 2 days is usually enough
- Best months
- May, June, July, August, September
Arugam Bay is a single sandy street on the south-east corner of the island, best known for a right-hand point break that draws surfers from May to September.
You do not have to surf to enjoy it. The lagoons behind the dunes hold elephants and crocodiles, Kumana National Park is half an hour south and far quieter than Yala, and Sangamankanda Point — the easternmost point of Sri Lanka — is a little further again.
Out of the surf season it is very quiet indeed, and the swimming is safer.
