Bentota is the most established beach resort on the west coast, which makes it convenient rather than undiscovered. It is roughly two hours from the airport, so it works well as a first or last stop.
The river mouth creates a sheltered lagoon alongside the open beach, so there is calm water for swimming and windsurfing as well as surf.
A boat trip up the Bentota river through the mangroves is worth a couple of hours — monitor lizards, kingfishers, and a mangrove tunnel you can take a small boat through.
