Ella
Uva Province
A hill village in a gap in the mountains, known for the Nine Arches Bridge, walkable peaks and long views to the southern plains.
- How long
- 2 days is usually enough
- Best months
- January, February, March, April, August, September
Ella sits in a notch in the escarpment, and on a clear morning you can see all the way to the south coast through the gap.
The Nine Arches Bridge is the draw — a 1920s viaduct built entirely of brick and cement with no steel, laid through dense jungle. Trains cross a handful of times a day and the timetable is posted locally; it is worth timing a visit around one.
Little Adam’s Peak is a gentle forty-minute walk with a disproportionate reward. Ella Rock is harder, around four hours return, and easy to get lost on without a guide.
Ella is forty minutes from our base in Bandarawela, so this is home ground for us.
