Hill Country & Tea
Haputale
Uva Province
A ridge town balanced on the southern escarpment, where Lipton’s Seat looks out over five provinces on a clear morning.
- How long
- 1 day is usually enough
- Best months
- January, February, March, April, August, September
Haputale straddles a narrow ridge, and the land falls away on both sides. On a clear day you can see the salt pans at Hambantota on the south coast, seventy kilometres away.
Lipton’s Seat is the point where Thomas Lipton is said to have surveyed his estates. The drive up through Dambatenne tea estate is spectacular; the view at the top is best before eight, after which cloud usually closes in.
This is fifteen minutes from Bandarawela and one of the quieter corners of the hill country — far fewer visitors than Ella, and just as good.
