Horton Plains
Central Province
High montane grassland at 2,100 metres, where the plateau ends abruptly at World’s End — a sheer 870-metre drop.
- How long
- 1 day is usually enough
- Best months
- January, February, March
A different Sri Lanka: open grassland and cloud forest at 2,100 metres, frost on the ground in January, and sambar deer grazing at the roadside.
The loop walk is nine kilometres and takes about three hours. World’s End is a sheer 870-metre drop where the plateau simply stops. The view is gone by around ten in the morning when cloud comes up the escarpment, so an early start is not optional — leave by five.
Baker’s Falls is on the same loop. Bring a fleece; visitors regularly underestimate how cold it is up here.
