Mirissa
Southern Province
A crescent bay on the south coast and the launch point for blue whale watching, with palm-topped headlands at either end.
- How long
- 3 days is usually enough
- Best months
- November, December, January, February, March, April
Mirissa is a wide crescent of sand between two headlands, with the small climbable Parrot Rock at one end.
The continental shelf comes unusually close to shore here, which puts blue whales — the largest animal that has ever lived — within reach of a morning boat trip. Sperm whales, fin whales and spinner dolphin pods are all regular. Sightings run roughly November to April.
Choose the operator carefully. Some boats chase and crowd the animals. We use ones that keep legal distance, and we would rather you saw fewer whales properly than more badly.
