Negombo is twenty-five minutes from Bandaranaike International Airport. Colombo is an hour, often more. On a day when you have landed at dawn after eleven hours in the air, that difference is the only thing that matters.
The town earns its place beyond convenience. The lagoon is worked by outrigger canoes much as it has been for centuries, the fish market at Lellama is at its best before seven, and the Dutch canal still runs north through the coconut country.
Most itineraries give it a night at each end without ceremony. That is the right way to use it: swim, eat, sleep, and start properly in the morning.
