Udawalawe National Park
Sabaragamuwa Province
Open grassland around a reservoir with roughly 600 resident elephants — the most reliable elephant viewing in Sri Lanka, all year round.
- How long
- 1 day is usually enough
- Best months
- Good all year
If you want to be confident of seeing elephants, come here rather than Yala. Around 600 live in the park permanently and the terrain is open grassland around a reservoir, so they are visible rather than hidden in scrub.
Herds with calves are common, and large solitary bulls are frequently seen close to the track.
The Elephant Transit Home on the park boundary rehabilitates orphaned calves and releases them back into the wild. Feeding times are open to visitors — and unlike some elephant attractions on the island, there is no riding and no chaining. We will not take you to the ones that do.
