Elephant Transit Home
Orphaned calves raised for release back into the wild at Udawalawe — no riding, no chains, no performances.
- Time needed
- About 2 hours
- Where
- Udawalawe
- When
- Any time of year
The Transit Home takes orphaned and injured calves, raises them with minimal human contact, and releases them in herds back into Udawalawe National Park. Over 100 have gone back to the wild.
Visitors watch feeding from a viewing platform at a distance. You cannot touch, ride or bathe the elephants — which is the entire point.
Sri Lanka has attractions that offer all three. We do not take travellers to them, and we will explain why if you ask.
Feeding is roughly every three hours; we time the visit around it.
