Galle Fort at dusk

A slow circuit of the Dutch ramparts in the last hour of daylight, when the heat drops and the whole town comes out.

Time needed
About 2 hours
Where
Galle
When
November, December, January, February, March, April

The full rampart circuit takes about an hour at a walking pace, and the last hour before sunset is the time to do it — the heat goes, cricket games start on the green, and local families walk the walls.

Inside there are Dutch Reformed churches, a working lighthouse, spice warehouses turned into cafés, and streets laid out in the seventeenth century.

Galle is still a living town rather than a preserved one. People live in the merchant houses; children walk home along the walls.

Best combined with an early evening meal inside the fort rather than driving back to a hotel.
